RECYCLED METAL & STONES
Our ultimate goal: 100% recyclability of all our products, starting with our Rebijoux collection.
It's natural for us to recycle materials such as plastics and paper, but what about precious metals? A recycled metal product is precious gold or silver that has been reclaimed from used metal products. Once the metal is separated from the other metals it is mixed with, it is melted down and reused to make new products. No purity is lost in the process of extracting metals from used jewellery.
We’ve built Protsaah off of long-term partnerships working with artisan communities affected by violence and instability. When we place sustainability at the heart of our business, we rely on both the environment and our people, from those who source our precious metals to the artisans creating our pieces, to you, the customer.
We design and produce jewelry you love by balancing these two aspects rather than sacrificing one for the other. This is why we are so proud with the new collection because we have taken the next big step in the right direction.
HOW DO WE RECYCLE OUR JEWELLERY?
The True definition of sustainability in fine jewelry is that we can trace the impact of our pieces from the raw materials to their final destination - you.
Metals can be recycled in two ways. The first type of recycling is small-scale. Small scale recycling is what Protsaah artisans have started doing, using traditional methods of metal extraction.
It’s a meticulous and a time-consuming practice done by hand that sees our local artisans in India recycle our end of lines, surplus, faulty items and samples.
The second process is large-scale recycling, which often takes place at an industrial level on a commercial scale. This process obtains large amounts of metals and involves extracting metals incorporated into items used for general industry so that it can be reused in the creation of more industrial products without the need to invest in more raw silver.
HOW DOES RECYCLING HELP?
Recycling metals can significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. During metal mining, massive amounts of electricity and energy are consumed. This is in addition to the ongoing smelting and processing that releases greenhouse gases. The process of recycling gold and silver is dramatically less damaging in terms of CO2 emissions and pollution as well as expending far less energy.
RECYCLABILITY IN ACTION
Do you know you contribute to recyclability? When you send us back a lost Protsaah earring or necklace, we send it to our artisans. These are melted down and used to create another wonderful creation.
As we continue on our sustainability journey, we strive to ensure every collection of ours reduces its impact on the environment. It is going to take time and effort to accomplish our goal, and we will keep working at it one step at a time.
